It is not very often you get the chance to meet someone who changes your life. Less so someone who has changed the world, but today Alice had that opportunity.

This morning at St. George’s hospital, Alice met Professor Graeme Clark, pioneer of the Cochlear Implant. I am not entirely sure Alice knew why we were there or why she kept having to smile for photos, but we certainly understood and one day she will too. In an albeit brief visit – brief thanks to Mr. Bob Crow and his striking hoards – Professor Clark gave us a little insight into his motivations for pioneering the technology, where the technology had come from and where it is going.

A more modest man you couldn’t hope to meet. Equally, Professor Clark is clearly still humbled by the impact of his achievements. By his own admission, it still brings a tear when he meets the children he has helped.

Thank you is not enough, but it is all I can say. Thank you so very much for what you have given Alice.

Now I know not to get over excited here. I know the devil is in the detail and statementing is a minefield of bureaucracy, negotiation, blood, sweat and tears, but Alice was approved for her statement this week.

We’ve come a long way in a short time. Three months ago she was refused her assessment and now she has been approved for her full statement.

I will reserve full judgement until we see what is produced in the first draft, but for now at least, we are delighted.
